Industrial Automation Project Completed by James Boyle

Demonstration of a Factory Pick and Place System completed by James Boyle. James completed the project while studying in NUI Galway and obtained a 1st class honours degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering.

"As part of the completion of my Electronic and Computer Engineering Degree it was required to complete a Final Year Project (FYP). After having successfully completed placement with Focus Engineering Ltd I knew that my future lay in Automation and I wanted to complete a project including Automation to reflect that. I was very fortunate that Focus Engineering Ltd likes to encourage people's ambition and were prepared to assist me in my project.

The project consisted of all the main elements found in any industrial packing line. Incorporated in the project was:

  1. A Siemens PLC to control the robots movements, communicate with the camera to get the objects position, control the conveyor belt and interface with the HMI.
  2. A HMI to allow user input.
  3. A robot to pick a stationary object from the conveyor belt.
  4. A Cognex camera to detect the objects position on the conveyor belt.

Focus Engineering supplied all the parts required to me for the duration of the project. Without this the project would not be achievable for me.

The project gave me a suitable avenue to improve upon the experience I gained on my placement and the coursework completed as part of my degree. The coursework completed in Digital Systems and Communications were extremely useful throughout the project. Focus Engineering Ltd was always only a phone call away for the duration of the project and their expertise when called upon was invaluable.

Following completion of this project I seen a massive improvement in my ability to code and how to structure my code as part of a project correctly."
